Foundation Sponsors Spelling Bee; Winner Gets $5,000 SigEp Scholarship; Event Televised May 29 & 30
Wednesday, May 28, 2008
This weekend is the annual Scripps Spelling Bee in Washington, D.C., and for the fourth year, the Sigma Phi Epsilon Educational Foundation will present a $5,000 college scholarship to the winner. The award will be made at the closing banquet on Saturday night, May 31st .
We sponsor the Scripps National Spelling Bee because we believe in the stated purpose that when students improve their spelling, they increase their vocabularies, learn concepts, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives. This principle aligns with SigEp’s mission statement: “Building Balanced Leaders for the World's Communities.” Good spelling is a basis for education and communication, which are building blocks for success, credibility and leadership.
2007 winner Evan O’Dorney of Walnut Creek, California (middle left) took a break from middle school this year, using part of his scholarship for a calculus class at the University of California – Berkeley.
Previous winning recipients of a SigEp scholarship:
2006 – Kerry Close, New Jersey
2005 – Anuarag Kashyap, California
Each winner has made an appearance at the biennial SigEp Conclave, and we look forward to the 2008 and 2009 winners joining us in August, 2009 in Orlando.
